By air. Ryanair fly to Bergerac (about 50 minutes from Maine de la Garde by car) from Bristol and Stansted, and to Angouleme (Tue,
Thur and Saturday only, about 1 hr 15 minutes by car) from Stansted. Easyjet fly to Bordeaux (about 1 hr 30 min by car) from Bristol
and Luton. Flybe fly from Southampton to Bordeaux. There are car hire firms operating at all three airports. We have used Hertz at
Bergerac and Europcar at Bordeaux, but there is plenty of choice (and the Hertz queue at Bergerac tends to be the longest because
they are recommended by Ryanair).
By boat. Speedferries from Dover to Boulogne used to be cheap and fast, but they have
gone bust! LD Lines have taken over that route - still quite cheap, but not quite as quick a crossing. It's about 8 hours drive from
Boulogne to Maine de la Garde. There are several operators providing Dover to Calais crossings, or there is Eurotunnel from Folkestone
to Calais. It's about 8 hrs 15 min by car from Calais to Maine de la Garde. Eurotunnel is generally a bit more expensive than the
ferries, but the crossing is quicker, of course. There are ferries to Le Havre and Caen, but they tend to be are more expensive, and
according to maps.google.fr you don't save nearly enough time on the car journey to make it worth while.
By train. Take the TGV from
Paris to Angoulême and then hire a car.
By car. The drive from Boulogne/Calais is motorway or dual carriageway all the
way to Angoulême (except for a bit around Rouen) and takes around 8 hours. A fair amount of the route is péage but it's not too expensive
and the motorways are generally much less busy than in the UK.
